This month, in celebration of the new school year and the second full year of Fuel Up to Play 60, your registered dietitian serving Kansas, Steph Cundith, appeared on KAKE 10 in Wichita and Fox 4 in Kansas City to talk to families about the importance of fueling up with breakfast. She shared nutrition tips and recipes from DairyMakesSense.com and also explained how Fuel Up to Play 60 encourages kids to fuel up with nutrient-rich foods, including low-fat and fat-free dairy, and play 60 minutes a day.
Midwest Dairy Council sponsored the Kansas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (KAAP) Annual Summer Conference through an exhibit featuring child health and wellness resources and Hiland Dairy flavored milk. At the meeting, the KAAP board met and approved the organization’s support of Fuel Up to Play 60. As supporters, they’ve signed an official “Certificate of Support” and posted the Midwest Dairy Fuel Up to Play 60 Web badge on the KAAP homepage. Midwest Dairy Council has also secured Kansas Dietetic Association’s support of Fuel Up to Play 60 through similar efforts. Next steps are to work with pediatricians and dietitians in the state to further engage in the program.
Other Kansas Updates
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback recently announced numerous appointments to boards and commissions. Among them, the Kansas Dairy Marketing Advisory Board consists of five appointed members who work closely with the Department of Agriculture to study and evaluate the need for establishing a statewide milk marketing order. Steven Ohlde of Linn is a member of that board, a fourth-generation dairy and crop farmer who has owned and operated Ohlde’s Dairy for more than 34 years. Ohlde is also a member of the USD 223 Board of Education and a member of the Midwest Dairy Association.

The Kansas State Fair got underway Friday, Sept. 9, in Hutchinson. Midwest Dairy has a strong presence in several locations, all communicating dairy messages to fair-goers. Once again we were part of the Agriland display in the Pride of Kansas Building with a computer kiosk inviting Facebook followers to “Butter-fy” themselves on Midwest Dairy’s Facebook app. We gave out more than 2,000 each of cow headbands and fans. We displayed several People Behind the Product banners in the dairy barn and around the dairy parlor. At the Birthing Center, our material showed what a cow eats for a week and what she produces in a week beside our From Farm to Food to You messaging.
New this year was a flat screen TV mounted outside the Dairy Bar, showing several of Midwest Dairy’s video clips highlighting People Behind the Product, chocolate milk and Fuel Up to Play 60. The TV was positioned in front of a bench area where fair-goers sit to rest and enjoy some cool ice cream (a very captive audience).
